The College of Law 2 Gain insight into a real legal environment The Work Experience component is one of the three essential components of PLT Plus. The purpose of work experience is to provide you with the opportunity to: y y  apply relevant knowledge and skills to solve real life problems for clients whether hands-on or by observation. y y  reflect on what is learned in the PLT coursework. You have many work experience possibilities available to you. However, your placement must be considered ‘eligible’ to be approved. This means it must: y y occur in the delivery of legal services; y y  be supervised by a legal practitioner who meets the Work Experience Rules; and y y meet the Work Experience Rules. How much work experience do I need? Work experience examples You have a huge range of opportunities that may count towards your Work Experience component. Examples include: y y Summer clerkships; y y Paralegal work; y y  Volunteering at community legal centres; y y  A placement with Legal Aid; y y  Working with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions; y y  Legal or tax division of a chartered accountants; y y  Government policy and planning work of a legal nature; y y  Judge’s associate or tipstaff; y y  Assisting barristers in chambers; y y  Working in government or semi-government legal departments; y y  Assisting Tribunal members (who are legal practitioners); and y y  Company in-house legal departments. Format Structure Choose if Short 25 days of approved work experience + Clinical Experience Module (5 weeks additional coursework) You’ve already had work experience – or 75 days of work experience is impractical Standard 75 days of approved work experience You have already accrued or plan to accrue a significant proportion of the work experience days needed
