Who is it for? How you will learn Our course has been designed specifically for legal practitioners who want to practise as a: • sole practitioner  •  partner of a law firm  •  supervisor of a community legal service  •  director of an incorporated legal practice The course is also beneficial for:  •  in-house lawyers with management responsibilities or who are looking to gain an understanding about legal services  •  experienced practitioners who are looking for techniques to grow their practice and update practice management skills •  Senior associates looking to build their skills and progress towards partnership To enrol in this program you must be an Australian lawyer who holds or who is currently eligible to hold a current local practising certificate or a current interstate practising certificate. The Legal Practice Management Course has three components: • Online learning • 3-day workshop • Online assessment Online learning You will be given access to the College Learning Portal from the course start date where you will access materials which will assist you to complete the course and assessments. These online materials include: •  Preliminary readings which meet the Queensland Law Society’s requirement of a minimum of 6 hours self-study prior to the 3-day workshop. • Trust Accounting unit - at the end of this unit you will be able to: >  outline the provisions governing the responsibilities of principal lawyers regarding trust monies. >  identify ways in which trust account provisions can inadvertently be breached and strategies to prevent these breaches. >  analyse current practices with respect to the maintenance of trust and office account records. >  implement any necessary policies and procedures to rectify poor practices. •  Self-assessment to assess your current legal practice management skills and capabilities. You can access your materials at anytime, anywhere and on any device. 3-day workshop The 3-day face-to-face workshop is held over Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The workshop is not only an opportunity for you to engage in practical exercises and tutorials with legal industry experts, it is also a great chance to mix and connect with other legal professionals. During the workshop, you will focus on seven core subjects: •  General principles of management • Financial management •  Practice management systems •  Managing technology & innovation •  Professional standards & ethics • Risk management •  Business development & marketing Assessment We want you to finish the course with the knowledge and skills to be a competent and successful practice manager. You will undertake four assessments throughout the course. The assessments will be submitted online and uploaded to Canvas both before the workshop commences and after the workshop concludes. The trust accounting assessment will be completed online before the workshop commences. Successfully completing each assessment will provide you with the confidence that you have developed the expertise to excel at the practice of law.
